No Thanks Cuban!

Mark Cuban wants to be involved in Texas Rangers ownership, and he's offering many different options to get there.

The team will go up for auction Aug. 4, leaving the group led by Nolan Ryan and Chuck Greenberg in limbo after it had initially been chosen as the winning bidder. Bankruptcy proceedings have muddied the waters and opened the process back up.

"I want to see the Rangers run," Cuban said to KTCK-AM in Dallas. "I think Chuck and Ryan deserve a lot of credit and what they're doing is a good thing, but with the way the deal has been structured, there is some risk there. And so I offered to help on a bunch of different levels so let's see what happens."

Cuban said that he will try to help get that group back on track, but if it doesn't work out, he is open to becoming part of another group trying to purchase the team.

"If you were to ask me a couple weeks ago if I was going to be involved, I would have said probably not," Cuban told the radio station. "But now with some of the court rulings, it's changed the economics of everything. ... That changes what some of the potential bidders can offer. I wanted to make sure I was at the table just in case."

That doesn't mean he'd leave Ryan and Greenberg out in the cold.

"If any group that I'm involved with did end up getting [the Rangers], we would certainly ask Nolan to be a part of it. And Chuck for that matter," Cuban told KTCK. "I'm hoping I'm more of a backstop than anything else.

"It really can be a good deal financially, but someone needs to be a backstop."

Greenberg could not be reached for comment.

This isn't Cuban's first atttempt to buy an MLB team. He put together a group trying to purchase the Cubs before the Ricketts family won the team.
